When you lease hardware directly from the manufacturer, you’re going to expose yourself to a series of games that are simply not in your best interests. At the inception of a new lease, manufacturers generally offer a low rate to tease you into signing. In reality, they are taking away your ability to have a choice when it comes to the middle or the end of your lease.
The manufacturers have created programs that allow them to make up for the teaser rates later on in the lease. The most popular form of this lease is called a FMV (fair market value) lease. By design, the manufacturer allows the leaseholder to buy back its equipment at a fair market value at the end of the lease. The market price the manufacturer quotes is all too often significantly less than what the real market is willing to pay for this equipment. In reality, there’s nothing fair about it.
By choosing the manufacturer to lease the equipment, users end up paying far more than if they had chosen to lease through a third-party lessor. Also, the manufacturer maintains control of the cost to upgrade or add on any features. You’ll pay far more for any features, add-ons, upgrades or memory that you may require.
